In de eerste plaats omdat deze symfonieën groenblijvend zijn – wonderen op het moment dat ze ontstonden en elke keer dat je ze tegenkomt enorm uitdagend zijn. Ten tweede omdat Gardiner een behoefte en een persoonlijke uitdaging voelde om voort te bouwen op die baanbrekende eerdere ervaring. Ook wilde hij de bevindingen en interpretaties uit breiden naar werken met een modern instrumentorkest.
