The Blackmagic Design Spares - ATEM Television Studio Connector PCB (Upper) is a specific interface board found in the rack-mount versions of the ATEM Television Studio (such as the ATEM Television Studio HD or HD8 series).

In these compact 1RU or desktop designs, Blackmagic often uses a "stacked" PCB architecture. The Upper Connector PCB typically houses the secondary tier of physical ports—often the HDMI inputs, Analog Audio (XLR/RCA), or Reference/Timecode ports—depending on the specific model generation.

Core Responsibilities

  • Port Structural Integrity: Provides the mechanical mounting for the upper row of BNC, HDMI, or XLR connectors on the rear of the unit.

  • Signal Conditioning: Contains the ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection diodes and filters that protect the Main PCB from "hot-plugging" spikes.

  • Vertical Interconnect: Bridges the signals from the top row of ports down to the Main Processing PCB via high-density ribbon cables or board-to-board headers.

When to Replace the Upper Connector PCB

Because this board houses physical jacks, it is a "wear and tear" part frequently damaged by cable strain.

  • Physical Port Breakage: An HDMI port has been "wiggled" until the internal pins snapped, or an XLR locking tab has broken off.

  • Signal "Drop-outs": If you have to jiggle a cable to get a signal, the solder joints connecting the port to the Upper PCB have likely cracked.

  • Specific Input Bank Failure: If the top row of inputs (e.g., Inputs 5-8) is dead, but the bottom row (Inputs 1-4) works perfectly, the Upper Connector PCB or its interconnect cable is usually the culprit.

  • Audio Hum/Static: If the analog audio inputs develop a permanent hum that isn't resolved by ground-lifting, a component on this specific interface board may have shorted.

Technical Installation Note

Repair Level: 3 (Moderate). 1. Rear Nut Removal: You must remove the specialized hex nuts and screws from every BNC and XLR connector on the back of the unit before the board can be slid inward.

2. Ribbon Cable Sensitivity: This board is connected to the Main PCB by very fine-pitch ribbon cables. Warning: These cables are often short and "taut." Opening the chassis too quickly can tear the connectors right off the board.

3. Alignment: When reinstalling, you must align all ports with the back panel holes simultaneously. It is highly recommended to start all the exterior nuts by hand before tightening any of them to ensure the board isn't sitting at an angle.

4. Static Protection: Like all ATEM spares, this board is highly sensitive to ESD. Handle it only by the edges of the PCB.

Diagnostic: Upper vs. Lower vs. Main

  • Upper PCB: Failure is localized to the top row of physical ports.

  • Lower PCB: Failure is localized to the bottom row of ports (usually the Program/Multiview outputs).

  • Main PCB: The ports are physically fine, but the software doesn't "see" any video, or the unit won't boot.

Expert Advice: If you are replacing this due to a broken HDMI port, consider using HDMI "pigtail" protectors or a cable breakout in the future. The HDMI ports on these boards are surface-mounted and lack the structural reinforcement of the BNC ports, making them the most common reason this spare is ordered.

Are you seeing physical damage to one of the ports, or has a specific bank of inputs stopped responding?

A must have for Kia Forte owners
For years, I’ve used phone mounts with adhesive stickers, but with the Florida heat, they would only last about a week. This car phone mount for my Kia has been a game changer—fantastic magnetic strength, super functional and a great value for the money! Super recommended.

It works great!
This mount looks good mounted on my KIA Stinger’s center vent. It allows for the vent to cool both the phone and the cabin, while not looking like it’s out of place. The mounting is secure, and I don’t worry about my phone falling while driving be cause the magnet is very strong. The vent mounting bracket looks like it belongs in the car. An inexpensive alternative to using mounts with 3M tape.
