Established in 1858 by British planter Christine Barnes, its name is believed to stem from a Lepcha word meaning “bamboo water carrier,” a nod to the region’s deep cultural roots.

From its gently undulating hills, one can glimpse sweeping views of snow-capped Mt. Kanchenjunga—especially breathtaking at sunrise, when the peaks are bathed in golden light. The Rangeet and Majhitar rivers meander through the estate’s lush terrain, nurturing a biodiverse haven filled with wildflowers, birdsong, and whispering groves.
