COURSE OVERVIEW
Welcome to the Key Account Management course. This program will equip you with the frameworks, interpersonal skills, analytical tools, and strategic methods required to build, develop, and sustain strong relationships with your organisation’s most valuable customers. You will explore what key account management is, how key accounts differ from ordinary customers, and how key account managers drive long-term growth by acting as trusted advisors, opportunity builders, and strategic business partners. This course also examines relationship mapping, communication strategies, proposal development, negotiation techniques, planning tools, and the structured processes essential for managing and advancing key accounts.
This course begins by examining what is meant by key account management, who a key account manager is, and what defines a key account. You will learn how organisations identify which customers are key by evaluating revenue contribution, growth potential, strategic alignment, and long-term value. This section also explores why key accounts are important and how they differ from other customers in terms of expectations, decision processes, complexity, and organisational impact. You will then explore the role of a key account manager, what your key account will expect from you, what your organisation will expect from you, and the skills and qualities required to excel in this role—including communication, commercial awareness, influence, problem-solving, planning, and customer insight. This section concludes by examining the concept of the key account as a business partner, the customer perception ladder, and how to move customers upward through increasing levels of confidence, trust, collaboration, and advocacy.
The next learning area focuses on opportunity development and strategic planning. You will explore how to discover and locate opportunities within a key account, how to group them logically, and how to prioritise opportunities based on value, feasibility, and urgency. This section introduces the key account development plan, including how to develop a key account plan, how to set key account objectives, and how to develop the strategies and tactics required to achieve them. You will examine how to write an account development plan that is clear, actionable, and aligned with both customer goals and organisational objectives. This section also explores the foundations of relationship management, how to increase your influence within an account, and the importance of knowing what to communicate and when. You will learn about different people types, how personality differences influence communication, and how to adapt your approach accordingly. This section also explores organisational mapping, including what an organisational map enables you to do and how to map out your key account’s structure to improve access, authority, and influence. You will also explore how to leverage and seize opportunities and why networking is essential to success.
A further part of the program examines structured communication, proposals, presentations, and negotiation. You will explore the purpose and structure of a contact plan, the importance of face-to-face communication, and how to build a communication rhythm that strengthens relationships. This section covers the structure and content of proposals, the style and length of effective proposals, and the 14 keys to success for presentations. You will also explore the six-step negotiation process, how to recognise your customer’s negotiation style, and how to adapt your approach to reach mutually beneficial outcomes. This section concludes with practical guidance on key account handling, including how to proceed when taking on a new key account, how to build a key account profile, how to maintain a key account diary, and how to use planning tools to improve consistency and effectiveness.
The final learning area focuses on review processes, account governance, and transition management. You will explore why and when to review the account development plan (ADP), how to conduct effective account meetings and follow-ups, and how to measure relationship progress and commercial outcomes. You will also examine how to hand over an account professionally, ensuring continuity for the customer and a smooth transition for the new account manager.
By the end of this course you will be able to identify and manage key accounts strategically, build strong business partnerships, recognise opportunities, communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, negotiate with confidence, create structured account plans, and deliver long-term value to both your organisation and your customers.
